Lake Gogebic Fishing Report

The opening weekend gave many fishermen a run for their money. The weather really did not cooperate, but this is expected for spring time in the area. Temps hovering at 25 degrees mixed with wind gusts of up to 50 mph and a little snow shower thrown in made conditions rough. But for those die hard enough to brave the elements, the reward was a sweet one. The spring tournament sponsored by the Lake Gogebic Chamber of Commerce had a great turnout of over 170 contestants. The top ten walleye ranged in size from 21.5” to the first place which was 24.0”. The first place walleye this year was caught by 9 year old Ashley from Plover, WI. Congrats to her on the big victory! Anglers found that working jigs, minnows and leeches were the best bet in these conditions to catch the big fish that Lake Gogebic is known for. And they are having luck in all depths of the lake right now from 6ft to 23ft depending on weather conditions and time of day. The beginning of walleye season also means the beginning of the annual Lake Gogebic Tagged Fish Contest. For this contest you must purchase a button for $3.00. Unfortunately, last years top prize of $1,000 was not awarded for the walleye. The tag was found on the ground under the eagles nest on East Shore Rd. Don’t let this years prize money go to the birds. Also don’t forget, if you get a big fish, have it weighed and measured before you gut & clean it so you can be entered into the monthly Rod & Reel contest. This one costs nothing to enter, but we need to have accurate proof of your fish so bring it up to the office to get it weighed and measured and have your picture taken. Remember, June 13 is the start of Michigan Free Fishing Weekend. Rooms are already being booked. Give us a call so we can fit you in. Weekends fill up fast and the best time to have a quieter lake is during the week. Call us and we can get you scheduled into a room that will fit your party’s size and needs. We hope to see you this spring and summer! Check us out on the web at www.walleyelodge.com. We also have facebook and myspace pages, so look us up and add us as a friend for all the important Lake Gogebic Updates!
