On the fifth morning we had a break in the rain but steady high winds
blew out of the northeast creating a heavy chop on the water.
I fished the southwest shore from Sundstrum Island
to the Spurr River Bay. There is a lot of underwater rock piles and weed structure
just west of the island, shown right, and I pulled several nice walleye
out of the area in an hour or so of trolling. At one point Slammer got so excited
he slid into the water going after the fish himself, or so he thought.
After Slammer climbed back into the boat
the rain started moving in again bringing a rainbow ahead of the front.
We had a good morning pulling in four decent walleye and releasing a few pike.
I headed back into the wind and followed the rainbow back to the resort for lunch.
We were on our fifth straight day of rain but it was also our fifth straight day of good fishing
so I did not mind the weather.
After a late lunch and a long nap I cleaned out the boat and prepared for
the evening fishing. I was very happy with the new boat so far. The full windshield
on the PRO-V IFS package was very protective and once the full top is installed
the rain and wind will not be a factor. The new Minn Kota Genesis self deploying
trolling motor made fishing alone a breeze. One push of the button and it puts itself
into the water or stows itself. I liked not having to go forward in bad weather
to pull it up or let it down. You can also adjust the depth from your seat.
I was also impressed with the new LCX-16CI Color Sonar & GPS system once I got the
hang of reading it. A very large screen and high resolution made it very easy to read from
any angle. The color made target separation much nicer than the gray scale I was use to.
I like the record feature, the maps are very detailed on the GPS, and it was very
easy to use and change settings. As far as the Lund and Honda what is there I can say.
They both perform better than anything else on the water as always.
