My friend, Duane Shank, owner of Brentwood Lodging in Indian River, is a
real ATV enthusiast. He has been bugging me for some time to ride and get to know the sport and
trail system better. If you are looking to ride in the northern lower peninsula Brentwood is a great place to start
and Duane knows the area roads and the routes to the trails.
For this trip we came to Maple Ridge Resort on Lake Michigamme,
one of my favorite places to snowmobile from and a very friendly ATV area.
Burt Lake Marine has provided me with the new Outlander 800 H.O. EFI XT.
Nice looking machine and the most powerful ATV on the market today. We will see how it holds up to me!
That first morning we headed out the back of the resort east on snow trail 8
to Peshekee Grade and north into the Huron Mountains. The four wheel independent
suspension really made for a smooth ride as we slowly worked our way up and around
the back roads and two tracks toward snow trail 14 which runs between L'anse and Big Bay
where fuel and food can be had. It was a beautiful morning with all the wild flowers in bloom
and the local critters scurrying about. I have snowmobiled these back roads many times
but things sure look different in the summer. Black Slate Falls was our first stop,
just before Peshekee Grade meets trail 14 by Arvon. I've passed this spot many times
in the winter but never noticed the falls under the snow. Great spot to take a break and a few photos.
