It was mid February and I needed to get out of the office for a few days.
I needed time with no phones, e-mail or letters to answer as it has been
a very busy start to the new year. Grand Marais was the perfect answer
to my input overload. Grand Marais is a small lake side town with only around
200 winter residents. Located on Lake Superior at the top of the
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
it is also at the top of the lake effect snow belt area that runs down to
Seney and over to Paradise with hundreds of miles of connecting trails.
I arrived at Hill Top Cabins on a
quiet thursday afternoon unpacked and settled into
our cabin before unloading my sled. There was plenty of parking
at the cabin for trucks trailers and sleds. The name says it all as the view
from the resort was awsome. Looking north over the bay and the town everything
was covered in white, the way it should be this time of year. What a peaceful
setting to unwind and forget your worries, and after unpacking I took a much
needed nap and did just that. After which I felt much better and decided to look around town.
To say there was a lot of snow is an understatement! Everywhere you looked in
this quaint little town snow drifts and piles covered everything.
It was a short drive downtown where we filled up at the Bayshore Market & Gas Station
as sled after sled stopped for the same. I noticed the Lake Superior
Brewing Co. across the street was packed with riders when I stopped by
Wilsons Market to stock up on sweets. Must be the hot spot as everything
in town was easily snowmobile accessible. It looked like a great place
to ride to and from and I would soon find out first hand.
