On our last day we were on the trail at sun-up watching a beautiful morning unfold
while we rode. As we approached the Middle Branch Escanaba
River on snow trail 8 a small spectator watched us from across the bridge.
We stopped and watched as the little whitetail walked closer and closer towards us.
Not wanting to cross but very curious he stood and stared for a few minutes
until we started to cross. He then leaped off the trail into the marsh and watched us
as we slowly passed by. If we had been on foot he would have been long gone.
A little further east we hopped on snow trail 5 south past Champion and through some
awesome wetlands.
Between Champion and Republic the trail runs on an old railroad grade with some
bridges and great views. We watched many different animals going about their business
as we enjoyed the nice smooth hard packed trail. We continued to work our way southeast
of Republic where another ATV route was located. We crossed into Dickinson County
6 miles east of Witch Lake on Flat Rock Road. This road is part of the designated ATV route
and a well maintained gravel road. Our next stop was at Copper Country River State Forest
Campground on the West Branch of the Escanaba River. Here we talked to a DNR employee
and got a few tips on the area. Everyone we talked to along the way was friendly and helpful.
This guy had a bigger 4 wheeler than both of us and really knew the area.
