It was a beautiful autumn morning when I first arrived at Munising Pro Sports
and met the new owners John and Billie Jo Schilbe. John and the service crew
were just getting ready to head out for a morning ride and offered to show me the way.
We took the Coalwood Grade east to Shingleton then the Haywire grade south taking a
short break where FFH-2253 crossed the trail. A long time customer of Pro Sports
came by on a very old Suzuki that he had been riding on these back roads for many years.
We shot the breeze for a bit about the different machines, trail conditions
and the great weather before heading on.
Further south on Haywire Grade we turned west on Thunder lake Road
through the town of Stuben, a gas stop if you need it. About 7 miles south on Thunder Lake
Road just before it y's off into FFR-2213 we arrived at our destination.
It was a huge sand pit with a number of steep trails running up the sides.
The locals called it the Thunder Bowl! Great spot to play, climb hills,
and generally run amuck. After storming up a few trails I found a safe
place among the trees on top to get a few action shots. The guys put on a good show
with sand flying and wheels reaching for the sky.
