After a heavy down pour Tuesday night we awoke to a gorgeous sunny
morning. Back on the Northwestern Trail we headed west past Iron River.
The trail is a multi-use trail and we had past a few hikers, bikers and a couple
motorcycles along the way. What I have not seen yet was any other ATV riders.
I stopped on the Iron River Bridge to wait for Duane. He had stopped to photograph
a deer. Looking down over the bridge I noticed a doe with her fawn in the river below.
I watched them until Duane caught up before heading further west toward Watersmeet.
But first a quick detour.
A few miles before Watersmeet I took Duane about a mile off the main trail
into Ottawa National Forest. On the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River
was Mex-i-min-e Falls,
shown above right. With Burned Dam Campground located next to the falls
there is easy access here. After taking a few photos we hopped back on the trail and rode into
Watersmeet for lunch and gas. Back on the trail just past noon we had plenty of
time to explore the area. Using the trail, forest roads, two tracks, and
a few creeks, we worked our way north and east into the Ottawa National Forest
to check out a couple more waterfalls. What a beautiful area!
