After a good night's sleep I was on my way early headed back south on the
Haywire Grade ORV Trail. It was a beautiful morning and a great time of year to ride.
The temps are cool, the morning dew keeps the dust down and the colors paint the
the woodlands. Another thing I like is, except for the local wildlife, you have the
trails pretty much to yourself. I stopped on the bridge over Beaver Creek,
just south of Shingleton in Schoolcraft county, and watched one of the locals
watch me. As long as I stay on the machine the deer don't related my shape to
a human and will usually look curiously without darting off right away.
Heading south past Jarr Lake the colors really stood out as the sun rose
high enough to illuminate the trees. This fall the deep reds were back,
mixed in with the bright yellows and deep greens. We have had a lot of rain
this September which helps bring out the deeper colors.
I slowly worked all the way down to
Langes Bay
on the northwest end of Indian Lake.
Here I took a short snack break by the boat launch and soaked up the warming sun.
Looking over the map I found many ORV routes to chose from. It was all Hiawatha National Forest so I just kept an eye
on the GPS and rode a number of two tracks, snowmobile trails and forest roads,
moving generally northwest toward Munising.
