The next morning we woke to over a foot of fresh powder covering everything.
I love days like this! A fresh white layer drifting down bending every
tree branch and smoothing out the morning ride. The temperature hung around
zero as we headed out trail 45 south west toward Newberry. The sun, starting to peak
over our shoulders, lit the tops of the trees along the way. The trail was
groomed and hard underneath as the top layer of fluffy snow parted like a boat's wake
as we smiled on. We cut the first slice all the way to the Tahquamenon Falls area,
and our first break.
We followed trail 9 north of Newberry and hit a few side roads and trails
along the way. Very little mid-week traffic, groomed trails and fresh snow
made for a very nice ride that day. We stopped in Seney to gas up and grab a bite
before heading back north into the two-tracks. The new Jag was starting to loosen
up a bit and was running even better than the first day. Around five that afternoon
we headed in past the Bear Trap, through Shingleton and into the Whirlpool back
at the Super 8 in Wetmore. I think we wore Duane out. As Kevin and I
headed out to dinner, after a soak, Duane stayed in fast asleep.
To bad. We had a nice steak dinner at the Buckhorn, off trail 7, and had the chance
to meet a few more sledheads from all over.
